Response to Standard article: "Belgium loses 30,000 jobs due to online stores"

ING and logistics group Montea recently released a study on e-commerce. Their findings? That there are significant job losses within traditional retail. And, according to them, this is mainly because Web stores are retailing more productively.

What do we notice?

That productivity is indeed higher with Web shops than with traditional sales channels. This is due to the direct link between webshops and consumers. And that is why we (almost) always look for - and find - the right approach for a partnership. Tailored to our client and the consumer.

Indeed, online sales are almost always a nice complement for traditional retailers. We are certain that both can co-exist. And that it's even what consumers really want sometimes.

On the other hand, in the article they also talk about the different laws and regulations in, for example, the Netherlands and Germany. Consider, for example, favorable regulations for evening and night work within e-commerce. Lower labor costs and more flexibility. With our neighbors, they are already a bit further ahead in that area.

At BME, we feel these drawbacks, too. They inhibit our growth. And we hope that the government removes this handicap quickly, so that more business and jobs can remain in Belgium.

What we do today is distinguish ourselves primarily by our approach. We have a clear vision to our customers. Because the cost handicap is not the most important reason in their decision-making process.

We add value through our comprehensive range of services. We tell our clients not to underestimate this. Because the success of a webshop depends largely on how you stand out from your competitors. For example, what makes you unique? Why should a consumer buy from you - and not from someone else?

We help our clients stand out in an ocean of sameness and thereby help increase their productivity. Thus, customer satisfaction goes hand in hand with increased revenue. So it's a win-win. For our client, and their client.

E-commerce is the way to go.

And when the new legislation comes in, it will also put Belgium even more on the e-commerce map. Don't forget that logistically, we are still at the center of Western Europe.

Finally, we can report with pride that we have hired 5 new people since the beginning of this year. And we hope to continue doing so into the future.
