E-commerce facts in Belgium

E-commerce in Belgium has been limping along behind countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, UK,... But has undoubtedly caught up in the last year. The following figures prove this:

  • 45% of the Belgian population bought something online in the past 12 months.
  • 25% of online shoppers made their first online purchase in the past year.
  • 40% of online shoppers report that online spending is new spending.

Clearly, there has been a fairly large influx of new online buyers. 1 in 4 of online buyers made their first purchase online only in the past 12 months. Mostly women and lower educated, lower income people jumped on the e-commerce bandwagon only in the last 2 years and are thus catching up.

The current budget for buying online is also increasing year after year in Belgium. On average, 130€/month is spent online. In detail, this means on a monthly basis:

  • 19% spend less than 20€
  • 16% spend 20 to 49€
  • 22% spend 50 to 99€
  • 13% spend 100 to 149€
  • 30% spend more than 150€

An important fact in these figures is that an online purchaser remains loyal. 84% will purchase online again in the future.

The number of active Web shops in Belgium, at "more than five thousand," is still only a quarter of what the Dutch have. So there is still a lot of room to start your e-commerce project in Belgium. Knowing that 45% of Belgians prefer to buy their products on a Belgian webshop.
